I met with Astin for the third time. From our last session,
Astin was a bit uncooperative and refusing to share the book we were reading on
occasion. I was also told from his mother that he likes activities such as
crossword puzzles, word searches, etc. Using my own experience as an uncle for
a 5 year old girl, I decided to play my ‘nice Uncle Tommy’ persona and told
Astin that if he cooperated with me he would get something sweet and good. He
asked me what it is and I told him I’ll show it when our session is over. I gave
him a crossword puzzle that I printed out earlier for him to do and he’s shown
to be more obedient and less distracted. I helped him with one of the words and
he did most of it by himself, although he needed some hints because there were
a few big words for a 6-year old to know. I taught him some new words (like “chalkboard”)
and sounds that combinations of letters make, such as ‘th’. He also has a habit
of writing the letter ‘S’ backwards, could be because he’s left-handed, that I’m
trying to get him to kick. At the end of the session, I gave him his treat: 2 pieces of
Starbursts and told him that I can’t do this every time but if he’s a good boy,
I can do it more often.
